So you know about my knee. The pain is getting better but if I want to marathon train this summer I must must rest from running for 2 weeks. When my physical therapist told me it was either rest or get full blown tendonitis and be injured longer I chose rest.
Well we are on day 4 of no running and yes it sucks. The weather has been perfect for running not too hot not too cold. Yes I would venture to say the past 2 nights it nearly killed me to see runners out there pounding the pavement while I drove home from work. It must be the same feeling my poor dog has when I stop him from chasing the squirrels. It must be his revenge on me after all these years ;)
I thought about it, and I decided that one injury will not get me down. Yes I miss running but there are so many other things I can do! Yesterday I hit the gym and pushed out some miles on the elliptical machine. It was hard staring down the wall of treadmills lol but I did and walked down to the rowing machine. It looked interesting...
I was unsure of how hard it would be so I figured hey I'm here and craving more cardio so let's give it a shot. It turned out to be quite the cardio workout I had wished for! I rowed for 10 minutes and kept my heart rate up where it is (160s) for a run of a 9 minute mile. Far higher than I can get from Mr elliptical! When I finished I felt a bit better. I realized how lucky I was.
I am still able to make my heart rate work and sweat, even if I cannot run it is no excuse to stop exercising. There are absolutely no excuses for this girl I have a goal and that is to be the best fit role model for myself and family that I can be. I may be on the injury side of the team but hey we still can work out over here! Actually its been fun trying new workouts.
This morning I woke up at 5am and headed to trx boot camp. It was all about plank moves today! This was perfect of course for me I'm a about plank for abs ;) I felt pretty Damn strong when the instructor told me I was badass for doing a 1 legged wall sit too. He thought I was pushing myself I told him about the knee so he got it. But I must say I did all my plank work next to a fellow runner a man who does marathons. I kept up with him and I felt pretty good! I realized I am pretty bad ass when it comes to plank work, I guess all my hard work is paying off :)
So my lesson I learned this week is simple: your body is capable of great things so do not give up, even if you cannot run there are other great ways to exercise and feel the burn!

So right!! You are better off not making it worse, and look at the benefits of all the other great workouts you are getting ! Great message for us all!
I am so sorry to hear about your knee, Colleen - but it sounds like you are doing the right thing by giving running a rest for a bit. It'll be waiting for you until you're ready! :) Let's plan some long runs together this summer when we are both getting ready for fall marathons! Keep up the GREAT work!!!
Sounds like you're doing great getting your workouts in despite the running ban. I'm sure with the rest and all your hard work that you'll come back stronger than ever!
Yes Jen and I cannot wait to be running with you!!!!
Deanna yes it sucks to not run but I know it will benefit me in the long run.
Katy its ok I will survive somehow hehe. YES I want to do some long runs with you and Kate it will make summer time marathon training so much more enjoyable :)
Thank you Michelle!
Thanks for the pep talk! I've been unable to run for a while now because of osteoarthritis. Hopefully I'll get the green light on Monday to get back to running. But it's great to know that rowing will get a great workout! Is it hard to keep the proper form?
What you said is so true. It is tough dealing with injuries but if we listen to our body & give it time to heal, then it can do amazing things for us. I too have been dealing with knee injury for the past year. I had ACL surgery in March of 2010 and had to go without running for 5 months! I was sure sick of spinning by that time. I also was signed up for my first 70.3 last August & was so bummed I couldn't do it plus I was out the $200 for the race fee too! I did recover fairly quickly and the injury led me to a lot of the workouts that I supplement now with and love. I reinsured the meniscus a few weeks ago but gave myself a 3 week break from running and Plyometrics . Now, I am back going strong and the knee is not bothering me a all, knock on wood. So, now I hope to get back into more training and do some racing.
Thanks for this blog. I have Celiacs too. Been overweight my whole life. Can't do dairy/sugar either. You are giving me hope that maybe this time on Weight Watchers with the right vitamin support I'll be able to work out like you do again. Keep training and blogging! - Jen
