My First Pair of Vibram FiveFingers

For quite some time I have seen several of my awesome bloggy friends rocking the Vibrams and always wondered what they were like and dream of owning a pair some day. I went to the Boston Marathon expo when it was in town 2 weeks ago and I finally tried a pair on! I got properly fitted by their awesome team down there and started to get excited that my wide feet might actually be able to rock a pair one day!

Then about a week ago an email comes into my in-box just tempting me: Vibram FiveFingers on Sale at City Sports!!! I had to click the link, I had to see what was on sale.... And much to my glee I saw the hot pink Vibram FiveFingers Performa for women on sale!! Now you may or may not know how much I love bright hot colors and hot pink being my favorite! So you can imagine how much I wanted that pair of shoes.

I debted for a few days on whether or not to get them, I had several questions in my mind. Ones like: can I really run barefoot? Am I going to hate the feeling? What will people think when they see them?

Finally last week I said to myself look they are half the price of your normal running shoes (new balance) so give them a shot and if you hate them I am sure someone will take them lol. So I ordered them!!!

I was beyond excited when they arrived I took them out for 2 test walks/jogs so far!

I must admit I have gotten a few side ways glances lol but my neighbor thinks they are cute! She appreciates the hot pink I think ;) Hey you know what? I love them!!!!!! That to me is all that counts anymore these days anyways! Sometimes I still think like old me and worry what people will be whispering behind my back, but usually I can snap myself out of it! I am glad I ordered these it was a well spent $50!!! And yes if you are thinking about buying them the sale right now is amazing click on the link I left above!

So how do they feel is what everyone is asking!

I like how my foot feels the ground more, I actually felt I had more control over my stride. My knee was not bothered by them!!! For me that is most important. They are tricky to get on and I am learning to wiggle my toes around better. But so far I have run a mile in them and walked a 1/2 mile in them. I would love if any Vibram pros could leave me some feed back on how they transitioned into them and how far they run in them. I am hoping they help eliminate my knee pain once and for all!

My only issue so far seems to be my heel, I am so used to wearing socks they rub up against it and irritate my skin right there. I will try some body glide over that area next time I take them out for a spin. My plan is to do a mile in them running 3 times a week for the next 2 weeks then up it to 2, etc etc adding a mile every 2 weeks.

Have you had any experience with barefoot running? What are your thoughts? I would love to know!!

I think you are going to love those shoes. I got mine last year after seeing alot of people in them at races. I asked lot of questions to. This winter I ran on the treadmill with them but the treadmill is not the same as running outside with them. I recently have had to commit to running only in my vff's due to hamstring and hip pain. When I ran in my running shoe the pain was to painful to keep running. I have a 20k the first of June I will be running in with my vff's. It will be my first race in them. I am finding out it is different for every body. You just have to take it real, real slow to transition into them. Your feet will tell you alot. If your feet hurt after adding some miles take a rest day. It will be well worth it. I have found that when I wear socks with mine I have a lot of friction on the balls of my feet. Dont have the problem when I go without sock. Good Luck . I think you are going to love them. Look forward to read your updates on them.

I've never worn them, but I know that some people use Injinji or ToeSox with them (that's actually what I wear with my "normal" shoes). I'm looking forward to hearing more about them as you wear them more.

Love the hot pink! I'm still walking in mine but plan to start on the track with them first.

Have you checked out MCM Mama's blog? She's been making the transition to VFF - http://mcmmama.blogspot.com/

Can't wait to read more about your transition.

I've been wanting to try these, too! At that price, I might pick up a pair. :) Are those the Performa or the Sprint? I looked at the website you linked, but I don't see a strap across the top on the Perfoma shoe, so that's why I'm asking.

I just got the hot pink as my second pair. I LOVE the color.

Stop by my blog - I've blogged in depth about my transition. Definitely take it slowly and I found that running shorter distances more frequently worked better than what I did from Oct -January which was to build one run a week up to 4 miles. Switching back and forth and running that much once a week was hard on my ankles. Oh, and expect that your calves will have some soreness. Good luck!

Best way to get your form down for running in Vibrams is to run barefoot on clean asphalt and wear your vibrams the rest of the time. If you don't get the barefoot form down right, it is likely you will wear out the Vibrams a lot faster. Once you get your form down, you won't need so much barefoot time, but it really is where you need to start. I've run a marathon in Vibrams and two halfs in bare feet, so going back and forth between the two is totally doable, but it is the barefoot time that will really fine tune your form.
